Work in progress - editing

This screen shot shows progress with the music video, In the image we are experimenting with the gobo effect on the video to see how it looks. So far I am not happy with the way it looks so it will be taken out. I am also adding in the new footage that we took in the green room and the theatre. I am also going to improve the lip syncing and make the spaces for the footage that will be filmed on Saturday.

Editing Practice

Using the footage that we shot following the concept of the ribbon representing the love that was lost between a boy and a girl, we were given the task to recreate the editing style used in the A-Level Studies music video shown above.
In order to do so we used layering and colour isolation to put the emphasis on the pink ribbon. Furthermore I used a distortion effect to create a further sense of layering within the images, this works because it links with the effect of layering videos with different movements in them such as the dancing.

Music Genres - representations

Each sequence shows the genre we've chosen through the mis-en-scene that we used such as the performance sequence that we wanted to link with the music genre of an Indie song, we used a piano and a microphone and the fact that we desaturated the clip and amped up the saturation that has made the video look more Indie because it makes the video look more natural and independent to the other clips in the video.
Furthermore the use of the green screen emphasised the fact that we were trying to create a clip that showed a pop music genre. This is shown through the background that we used because of the bright colours that are used, this also shows that we can create a spectacle clip using a very simple method.
Finally the use of filters to create a more faded effect and speeding up the clips creates a more of a narrative and shows a more instrumental genre of music.
However to someone else might see the last clip as referring to a pop song because of the fact that the people in the clips are being shown as wearing clothes that fit in with trends so it may link more to a song that falls in to the genre of a popular culture, this links to the theory of Berger's way of seeing which says that the audience twists what the video is trying to say.
The use of the green screen is effective to an extent because it creates a more interesting back drop for the clips, however if we were to do this again we would have tried to create sequences for to represent a music genre without using the green screen to show that we can use different locations to represent music genres without any upfront planning.

Green Screen Practice

Using a green screen can help create locations that you wouldn't otherwise have access to, such as stages or large houses or the sky. I think the way we used the green screen worked well because we were able to create a narrative, spectacle and performance clip with creative backgrounds.
Using a green screen would be helpful to create a spectacle music video to create a more striking and out of this world visual.

Kanye West's music video for his song Bound2 is an example of a music video that used green screen to create a backdrop for Kanye who is mostly shown singing and dancing with a back drop of what seems to be somewhere above a mountain.

Prelim Task

In evaluation, we made a music video of Grenade, Bruno Mars. We originally had to start by watching the music video for grenade, then story boarding the first thirty seconds of the music video. We had to select a scene where we were easily able to recreate the scene, in which we found that there were very few 30 second scenes without having elements that we could not recreate, whether this was with a piano or on the streets with gangs, which we would not have been able to recreate.
This was fairly straight forward to do as we had reference angles shot types and lyrics to the video per frame. When it came to filming for the opening sequence, we had to tackle a variety of issues, including being able to replicate certain frames of the music video, such as being able to over come the issue of not having the similar locations for filming. For example, in the music video Bruno Mars is placed in a bedroom for the majority of the video, however, we did not have access to similar environments to film in. As well as that, we had to try to recreate the raining effect, despite the fact that we were unable to film whilst it was raining. We also had to work around a construction site outside our location, therefore we had to improvise with a couple of angles, so that we didn't get any of the construction in the background. When it came to props, we didn't have availability to all of the props, such as a hat, as worn in the video. However, we were able to recreate the majority of props, or we were able to recreate as close as possible to the real video. For example, in the music video, Bruno Mars was walking along the road with traffic driving past him, however, we were unable to do this as it would have been unsafe for our actor. We were also unable to use a real piano to pull, so we had to recreate the scene as best as possible without the piano.
When looking at our filming, we realised that some of the shots don't match with the original filming. However, we were able to recreate the majority of the shots and made them match as well as we could. On reflection, it would have been more beneficial if we had played the song in the background, in order to be able to match up the lip syncing. In one element our video is slightly slower than the soundtrack. By playing the soundtrack, it would have been easier to do this. It took a while for us whilst editing to match up the lip synching and the soundtrack, but the majority of the scenes match the scenes from the original video.
